Edit July 2012: It’s always wonderful to hear young people leaving comments telling me how many books they’ve read, it’s reassuring in a way as sometimes I feel like people don’t read as much as they should anymore. English isn’t my first language and I only started learning it at around 11, really picking it up at 12, and thus I’m still trying to catch up with all the books I’d have loved to read as a child. Feel free to leave more recommendations, and I’ll try to read them all, have a great day.
Edit 16 Jan 11: I’ve been reading a great deal since getting myself a Kindle for Christmas :) If you’re here looking for books to read, I would recommend Haruki Murakami as an author, or Norwegian Wood specifically (he’s more well-known for Kafka on the Shore though). One of the best books I’ve ever been lucky enough to read. Thanks for the comments left, I take a note and hopefully will get to read them soon. Enjoy your reading :)
Edit 18 April: People on the Internet are soo funny! Uhh read the Bible if you want, I personally have no religion really… but everyone in my family and extended family is Buddhist, and if I’m not even going to read the Buddhism Teachings, I’m not gonna read the Bible! Or any other religious books. Because I am not interested! Go ahead and comment on my not reading the Bible —- i’m still not gonna read it. Everyone else, enjoy the list :)
There are things I’d like to write about once i find the time and the mood. Probably at a random cafe in town. I’m tired of writing brainless updates that I don’t even know why I do. One day I’m going to read back on these entries, and I’d like to remember more than what I bought at a Mango sale-off.
Meanwhile, here’s a list of 100 books to read before you die. Ticking off the ones I’ve read as [x]. I need to start reading more again. Losing yourself in books is kind of a better alternative, rather than alcohol and blasting night clubs.

I’ve read 21 of them! At 17 I think that’s a pretty decent number although I’m pretty ashamed to not have read the classics like Little Women and the Jane Austen stuff…
All those mentioned in the list (that I have read, of course) are all very beautiful. and definitely worth your time. I’m sure the rest must be, too. So this year my reading resolution is:
- To Kill a Mockingbird
- Little Women
- Catcher in the Rye
- Alice in Wonderland (I know I’ve only read the children’s version :/)
- Memoirs of a Geisha
- Winnie the Pooh
- Far From the Madding Crowd (gonna read this this week!)
- Lolita
- The Five People You Meet In Heaven
- The Faraway Tree Collection
Some of the classics look so boring on the shelf I don’t even want look at them twice. But I reckon they must be good… oh well.
..
PS:/ Really proud to mention that I read Les Miserables in all its full blown unabridged glory! I even remember crying on the bus whilst holding my phone for light as it was getting dark outside…
I read Harry Potter in Vietnamese version.
I read #18, 22, 42, & 61
#50 Atonement has a movie based on the book. Keira Knightley, who played Liz in P&P, played the main character on this one too. The book is brilliantly written. Ian is one of my favorite authors ever.
And I agree. Some classics can rot in dust for all I care
Can’t STAND Ian McEwan!! I read Atonement and his style struck me as self-congratulating which really gets my goat! However I tried again with Amsterdam which was much better. Still not my cup of tea, but if you like him definitely give it a go.

Hi, may I just suggest you to read book #51 Life of Pi by Yann Martel. It’s one of the most beautiful stories I’ve ever read and I most heartily recommend it. Almost impossible to put down and I’m sure it will make you want to read more, too! :D Enjoy your reading year!
I’ve heard so much about that book as well! Will certainly do when I get my hands on them.. only problem is i don’t see it in local bookstores :( Thanks for your recommendation!
try this website:
http://www.booktopia.com.au they have this book cheap x
Can i suggest you read “of mice and men” i presonally think it is one of the most amazing books i have ever read i did it for a personal study in english i couldnt put it down and the ending i couldnt stop crting it was amazing!
hey there!
Thank you for the recommendation. As I mentioned, the books I can get my hands on are very, very limited in Saigon. I’ll probably order some very soon now from betterworldbooks.com, and i’ll make sure I put “Of mice and men” in the list. Maybe I’ll write about it once I read it!
Thanks again! I’m currently reading this Jackie Collins series and they’re not half as bad as I thought they were.. maybe you should give them a try, if you haven’t already :) :)
hi there… starting monday im going to start reading the top 100 then continue on to the next 100… just a little advice i would be a year or two aside for 24: WAR AND PEACE… it will take a while.. have fun and enjoy i know i will
Hey! Good luck on the book journey :) I’ve checked out the site, but the shipping fee is still abit too much for me at over 7 dollars a book, that’s about half the price of the book itself already.. :(
You have listed as one entry the chronicles of narnia and then as another entry the lion the witch and the wardrobe, would this not come under the first entry
I got the list off an internet search as well. Hmm.. I guess that slipped past me.
how can you have bridget jones diary and not one ernest hemmingway novel!! I suggest you subsitute for for whom the bell tollls
Oh I’ve heard of that but never actually read it! Ahhh too many good books too little time / cash :(
Hey, just wanted to say you’ve got a great list of books here!! Thanks to college, you’ve listed quite a few books I was required to read, and I’d gladly read again! Enjoy your selections :)
Thank you Jess! Enjoy your readings ;)
what about uncle toms cabin…
Never heard of it.. by whom? Oh my one of these days I’m definitely buying books from Amazon.
hahahahaha wow someone doesn’t pay attention in history class!!
Go with ebay, it is much cheaper than amazon. I was able to get a few really great books in new condition for four dollars and that was pretty much just shipping!
Uncle tom’s cabin is one of the four american classics that are said to change the public or something. The others include Silent Spring by Carson, a documentary book about chemicals.
Ohh is it very good??
When I heard the word “classic”, I know it’s not for me. Probably dealing with extreme issues such as poverty and such.
I like romance novels with great wit, humor, and actually realistic views. That’s why I recommended “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “High Fidelity”
Btw, the former is initially a movie, probably one of the best best best romantic comedies from last decade.
you should definitly ready PRIDE&PREJUDICE, its a classic but Jane Austen was definitly ahead of her time, the main character is witty and not what you sould expect from a 19th cenutry woman.
I read Memoirs of a Geisha last summer and it was such a good book. I literally could not put it down. You will enjoy it :)
I keep seeing that book around but never really get to reading it. Probably because I saw the movie some years ago and it wasn’t anything too impressive I guess. Thanks for the recommendation though, I’ll go check it out after this!
Yes Uncle Tom’s Cabin is good. As long as you get old country slang.
Where is # 26
I know right?
why do you not plan to read the Bible? Lots of literature has it’s roots in biblical lore. You have a closed minded approach to literature if you shut out this book.
Well
1. I’m not Christian
2. I don’t understand it
;)
Plenty of people who aren’t Christian read the Bible and they understand it. I’m sure if you can read the books that you have read on this list you can understand the Bible. It really is something good to look into(:
As a devout atheist I am saying “you should really read the bible.” I believe people should have a full grasp of what it is they do or don’t believe. I’ll be starting my second read through after I’m done with “The Trial.”
hiya! i was wondering if you made this list up yourself or if you got it from somewhere else. if so i would really like to know where you found it. i just finished atonement and really enjoyed it!!!
Like all of you who got here, I googled that list! It’s been a really long time so I can’t remember the exact source, but I’m pretty sure it’s from BBC :)
thanks a million your a star! :)
Good collection of books. I would add Trinity by Leon Uris. Best tale ever written. If you have the time to invest it is worth it.
Thanks for the recommendation ;) I’m currently reading Jitterbug Perfume, but it’s noted!
you should definitly read pride&prejudice, and i can honestly say i was extremly disappointed in the movie, i mean dont get me wrong the movie was great and it will help you picture the characters better when you read the book, but they left out quite a lot of characters (like Mrs.Hurst, Bingley’s oldest sister), and many of the major scenes didnt even happen the way they did in the movie (like when Darcy proposed to Lizzy, when Lady Catherine de bourg went to longbourn) it was quite different, everything that was supposed to happen happened but very differently than in the book. P&P is one of my favorite books Jane Austen makes you feel as if you were there. OH and THE CATHER IN THE RYE is also an awesome book its kind of a dark book, but with out a doubt a great book, i just wish J.D. Salinger had published more books. but yea lol thats what ive got to say,,,,cus reading all these books is like on my life’s to do list :D
Ohhh i’ve heard mixed reviews about the Catcher in the rye hehe (and i still didn’t get to reading it yet).. but I’ll buy it when I come across it :)
I’ve read 17 and I’m 13 :D
That’s just awesome ;) Young people who like to read gives me hope! Hahah.
that is so amazing. i am 16 and i have read like 12 of them!
immerhin ein buch dabei, das ich gelesen habe, “sakrileg”. wow.
nur noch 99…
before you continue your reading quest…absolute must buy…kindle3 wifi+3G .. awesome
i have read 47 of those books and i am only 12. i have the secret garden and began to read it though it does not interest me. the harry potter series is amazing no wonder you read it. after looking at the list i feel like buying some more books now.les miserables and oliver twist are on the top of my list.
one more thing i would like to recomend you a series of books to read-the lemony snicket series
let me see how you do with that.
WOW!
where is number 26????????????????
Woah, 12 year old read 47?? How?! Which ones??
I’m 14, and I’m proud to have read 24 of these!
I agree about Lord of the Rings, I’ve tried it loads of times, never got more than a few pages in, woops :/
While I am happy that Animal Farm was on this list, I feel that 1984 was the better George Orwell book.
Some good Bible reads you may try are Proverbs and also Ecclesiastes. They cut through the minds/hearts/spirits of everyone and not just Christians. Give it a try, the wisdom is timeless!
Who wrote that list? In my personal experience, there are several books on the list I would prioritize before others and others I wouldn’t bother with at all. First of all, they are more enjoyable to read than you might expect. I think they are important to read because I think they are books that you sort of “experience” and tend to stay close to your heart years later. While “Little Women” is a classic, it is geared towards a younger audience, specifically younger girls. When I revisited it recently, I found Alcott’s voice to be too preachy and more provincial than I remembered. I think morals and lessons should be gleaned from subtle hints in the text, but Alcott’s sermonizing is annoying. Also, the characters are flat and “squeaky clean”- I find them boring. While it should be appreciated for being an important step for feminist progress and offers an interesting depiction of life during that time, I wouldn’t read it before Catcher in the Rye, 1984, The Great Gatsby, and To Kill A Mockingbird. Catcher in the Rye was the first “cool” book I could relate to when I read it. Regardless of how you perceive Holden Caufield, many people are attracted to it because of its popularity and cultural relevance. The Great Gatsby was another novel many people enjoyed reading in high school. I also definitely recommend it before college. Also, 1984 is one of those fascinating novels that was eerily ahead of its time and allows for endless pondering and discussion on it’s relevance today. To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorites as well. Atticus Finch is a venerated character that stays with you years later. Then, the last two are longer but still awesome. Middlemarch and Crime and Punishment are two of my favorite novels because I didn’t realize my appreciation for them until long after I finished reading them. They are beautifully-written and offer ageless wisdom on the human condition. These are the novels have shaped my own life and personality far more than any Dickens novel, except for A Tale of Two Cities.
Some classics are really as pretentious and disengaging as they seem in the first few pages. While it is fun and light, I don’t consider Bridget Jones Diary a must read. Personally, I also felt Memoirs of a Geisha was overrated. Moby Dick is not a book I have any fond memories of reading myself. There are several Jane Austen novels on that list. I loved Pride and Prejudice, but I don’t think you need to read all of her other books unless her voice resonates with you. All her works are similar; they share the same 19th century time period and describe a glorified romance usually by including the landed gentry of English society.
Following the same logic that most authors have a “greatest hit” novel that serves as a paradigm for their style and beliefs, I wouldn’t bother with The Five People You Meet in Heaven unless you want more of the new-age-ish cheesiness in Tuesdays with Morrie. I actually think Albom can tell a good story, but the story is weak and the writing is worse in Heaven. Also, it was too contrived for my taste- I feel like I only continued reading to find out who the five people were. Again, it’s sort of about following your own tastes.
I truly believe people who didn’t read these novels in high school or college have missed out on something. At your age, I also suggest Atlas Shrugged and Slaughterhouse Five- two books that have followed me everywhere. I have no idea why I just wrote all this, but I hope it helps. I mean if you are realistic about how much you are going to read, some of these books are for people who don’t leave the house.
Wow thank you for the super long comment! I kept forgetting to reply you, but thanks so much for the suggestions :)
*blush* at 27 I’ve only read 17 of those! But to be fair I have 42 of them on my shelf (plus I can’t stand the idea of reading Bridget Jones’ Diary).
I noticed you have The Life of Pi – one of my all time favourite books. Mid last year the author released Beatrice and Virgil which is one of the most moving stories I have ever read – it was a quick, light read but Martel’s style is just perfect, an absolutely must read.
Just to add a few favourites:
Middlesex – Jeffrey Eugenides
We Need to Talk About Kevin – Lionel Shriver
The Alchemist – Paulo Coelho
Happy reading!
Take your time, ultimately books are for enjoyment aren’t they :) thank you for the recommendation.
I was surprised to see that I’ve read about a quarter or more of these, though I can’t say that I liked Lord of the Flies. Still, there are some ones that I haven’t read, but I think I’m going to have to now that I’ve remembered them.
Ha! 43. Not bad
Why did you take out #26?
Why don’t you plan on reading the bible?
I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE THAT I HAVE READ SOME OF THE BOOKS IN THIS LIST.RESOLVED TO READ THE REMAINING BOOKS.WUTHRING HEIGTHS THE NEXT.
I’ve read 28 of the books and had another 15 of them on my to read list. I’m not Fraid to read the bible even though the publisher of this list seems to be.
She’s not ‘Fraid’ to read the bible either, she simply does not want to, so stop judging her and go read it yourself if you feel so inclined.
I believe you mean afraid…and she isn’t afraid she is entitled to her beliefs and opinions. And with that comes her choice of religion and beliefs and if that involves reading or not reading the bible then so be it. Now go and sit down and read the actual Bible, not the new ones the real original one and smell the roses and let reality sink in. Okay, good…bye.

I have read about 8 from your list. It’s a good list and all I have to say is if you’re gonna read Dante you should read it all, not just “the inferno”. It’s only one part. The collection is titled
The Divine Comedy, and if you can get the illustrated version. The paintings depicted are marvelous. Oh, and if you only read the abridged of anything, you may not get the most out of the book.
I’m 14 and glad to see a few familiar book titles.
Thanks a lot, this is a great list I can use.
no problem :)
Hehe I’m 14 and have read at least half of these; made it my mission to read the rest!
thanks for this one..i was really running out of options here..the other list(s) i went through did little for me..since i’m a purely fiction person..im (almost) at par wid yu..im thru 24 of them..and will turn 17 in jan..:) though if you get a chance read a child called ‘it’ by..uh..someone..i forgot the name..ooh..by dave pelzer..its pretty touching..
thank you again for the list..though its pretty hard to buy OR get these books shipped here..i live in NEPAL..:/
hi! glad to hear it’s been helpful for you though once again I stress – I didn’t come up with this list! Also I have already read A Child Called It and the several subsequent parts, I have to admit they’re pretty good though a little disturbing.
enjoy your reading’
i will..:)
“The Handmaid’s Tale” is really good. I read it in about 3 or 4 days.
I know its definetly not a top 100 book, but if your just looking for a good read and are sort-of interested in country life, check out ‘The Rouseabout’ or any other book by Rachael Treasure.. A bit of humour, tradgedy, love.. an all round good book… I just thought i’d put this up here because i think they sort of get overlooked… also I loved the Da Vinci Code, and Angels and Demons by Dan Brown! havn’t read any others of his but those two are fantastic!!!
The fact that you are so closed minded about the bible and won’t even consider reading it is exactly the reason you need to. I pray before you die you change your mind.
Why can’t you just leave her alone? Threatening her to read the bible isn’t going to make her want to read it any more than she already doesn’t want to. She’s 17, if she feels she wants to read it when she’s older, she will. If not, why do you care?
I agree – if you do read ALL these books on your list before you die, and you still have chosen NOT to read God’s word….ever wonder WHERE you will be when you die???
“God’s word’ my ass. Go find some one else to bible bash, you cretin. Have read the King James version. Hypocrisy and condescension in summary. That goes for any religious nut out there who cannot comprehend the idea of self will and keep on shouting out about so called divinity without shred of evidence to support it. This is a forum for a young woman attempting to find wisdom and knowledge in literature. Let her be and take your small minded nonsense to some other venue where you can exhort other nuts like yourself.
p.s Read Bill Bryson’s -A short history of nearly everything
Christopher Hitchens – God is not great
I’m 16 and I’ve read 59 of these, and they have been some of the best books I have ever read. This list is very good with a mix of classics and more modern litrature!!! :) and to add, you shouldn’t be so close minded about the Bible, I’ve read it cover to cover in various translations and just becasue its a religious book doesn’t mean you should not read it, you should open yout minds and read things out of your comfort zone, you can learn a lot!
Love this list! I have read quite a few of these, the only problem is it has been a while so I’ll probably re-read them >.< …jk :) But, one thing I would suggest is Ayn Rand. She isn't on this list which is thoroughly dissapointing to me because if you have the discipline to read her books, it can change the way you think. Her stories are really captivating. The two I would recommend is Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. They are really brilliant and other than that I have and old list that would give you some more. There's Old Yeller, The Miracle Worker, The Diary of Anne Frank, Summer of My German Soldier, Death Be, Roots, The Scarlet Letter, A Farewell to Arms, The Old Man and the Sea (everyone hates this book!!), For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Outsiders, Across Five Aprils, Flowers for Algernon, The Jungle Book (or even the Jungle by Upton Sinclair!), A Separate Place, A Wrinkle in Time, The Call of the Wild, Sounder, The Indian in the Cupboard, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Fahrenheit 451, My Antonia, The Canterbury Tales, Muder on the Orient Express, The Red Badge of Courage, Robinson Crusoe, Silas Marnier, Invisible Man, Johnny Tremain, The Giver, Sarah Plain and Tall…
It goes on. But I will be adding your list onto mine, I got all of my books off of one of my teachers wall posters in english but so far it has been one of the best selections I've every enjoyed! Good luck with all of your reading!
There is no 26
poor for those who dont wanna read the Holy Bible, the stupidity remains in them!
Lay off about the Bible. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to read the Bible. I would consider it a long and difficult read especially for someone who places no religious value on its contents. Would you say the same things to this person regarding the Koran? I think not. Just because someone does not want to read a religious text (that holds no meaning for them) does not make them stupid. Please stop commenting about it, its getting really annoying.
Thank you! This poor girl is being harassed simply because she doesn’t want to read something. I’m 23 and STILL don’t have any interest in reading the entire bible cover to cover. It does NOT make me a horrible person, or stupid, but thank you for your ignorant pre-conceived notions of people that aren’t exactly like you.
Lay off, I have read about religion but I am not going to read the Bible until I have interest in it. Get off the girls case, people like you only make people not want to read it more. She isn’t going around forcing you to read something, now is she? No…so take my advice and back off go and read your Bible in peace and leave others in peace as well. If you want someone to take your opinion then you take someones own opinion as well, if you don’t then you are just being a hypocrite. *sigh*
Read:
“Finnegan’s Wake” by James Joyce
“A Source Book in Chinese Philosophy” by Wing-Tsit Chan
“The Prince” by Machiavelli
That’s the some of the finest literature ever written!!
I’ve read 16 at 14…ok, I guess. I am currently reading the entire works of Steinbeck :D
Oh, let me warn you though…the Kite runner is quite gory, but very meaningful yet haunting.
i would also add “birds without wings” by louis de bernieres, its my all time favorite
Have you read ‘never let me go’ by ‘Kazuo Ishiguro’? I watched the film and looked for the book later and ended up buying two books in different languages; my language and English.
I don’t enjoy really Murakami all that much. I’ve read ‘a wide sheep chase’ and ‘Norwegian woods’ and found out that I’m not into him.
why is “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” not listed here? That’s a great book. I think you should try it. ^_^
Why is “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” not listed here? Try it, its a great book. ^_^
Wow, I have not read many of them. I think I need to start reading more classics. Kudos on being your age and have already read 17 of them!
pretty impressive for a 17yr old, I’ve read quite a few on the list and currently reading anna karenina, also trying to read catch-22 for the past TWO years (I hate giving up on anything I start)
anyway, my 16yr old daughter has read and re-read little woman as well as a number of Austen’s classics, besides enjoying them I know that its impacted on her English literary skills……
I highly highly recommend The Reader by Bernhard Schlink, it is my all time favorite book. The movie is great it doesn’t capture the story like the book and the movie leaves out so many important details, they make it look like it is all about sex when it isn’t. That book should be on a one hundred books to read before you die list!
I have read thirty-two of these books…I have to print the list so I can read all of them…does reading things on the bible and the passages that are from the bible in those books count as reading the bible????
I found your list and read some of the posts, then took the time to figure out how many of the books listed here that i have read. I am happy to say I have read 55 of them and I have read the bible twice and i am working on my tired time. yes I am a book junky i could list about 100 more books that one might consider reading before they die but I will not go that far today. Keep reading and never stop it is a great way to relax and learn.

Hi I have read may of the books on the list the faraway tree ones as a child les mus my all time favourite book ever :-)
I suggest you read 50 Shades of Grey. It is horribly written, and definitely not for children. But you should read it before you die, just to say you did. And WHERE is Sherlock Holmes? I did NOT see it on your list. It should’ve been first!
Are you a fucking duck or something?
I’ve read 21, and im 14 :D proud of myself
I’m 17 and as well and I’ve read a number of these, I lost count quickly.. lol. I do recommend Anne Of Green Gables, I read it when I as in 6th grade, and as boring as it may seem, it was actually a fantastic book. I find myself wanting my own copy all the time, it was so lovely.
You should defiantly add All Quiet on the Western Front to your list

did you enjoy the hunger games though? What do you think of Anne of Green Gables? Isnt it just beautifully written? I dont understand what Catch 22 is about! what is it about? The list was great. I am using it to choose my next reading mission :) xo.

Since this blog post I’ve read a lot more books and discovered so many other wonderful ones out there. As long as you enjoy reading that’s all that matters, hope the list is useful to you :)
Don’t read the bible :) There are plenty of great books out there!

With havin so much content and articles do you ever run
into any issues of plagorism or copyright violation? My site has a
lot of unique content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my agreement. Do you know any ways to help prevent content from being stolen? I’d really appreciate it.
Hi, I’m studying Jane Eyre for my Advanced English dissertation and have to say it’s quite difficult to get into, but after you do it’s brilliant :) I’m also pretty happy to say my school got us to read many of these books :) I also respect your decision not to read the bible and I’m Christian before anybody starts having an argument with me. It’s not for everybody like all books :)
i would recommend you to add “diary of a young girl” in your list of books….. There’s no end to the list per se’……. I wish people could read books of even non-english writers in their original flavour…
i know.. :( every time a book is translated it loses some substance.
It’s perfect time to make some plans for the future and it is time to be happy. I’ve read this
post and if I could I wish to suggest you some interesting things or advice.
Perhaps you could write next articles referring to this article.
I desire to read even more things about it!
